Presidents
Message - John Curtis, Interim President
In October, the City renewed its contract with
Main Street Martinez (MSM). Currently, our organization
receives $50,000 per year from the City. This is not
a grant, but is a payment for services rendered to
the community by our organization. The funds from the
City help MSM provide approximately 2,000 paid staff
hours and marshal around 8,000 volunteer hours to revitalize
our traditional business district.
We are pleased that the City recognizes that a Main Street organization is a
great tool for revitalizing its downtown business district. A local Main Street
group is very effective at organizing volunteers (downtown businesses, property
owners, residents and other stakeholders) to accomplish the long-term goal of
reinvigorating its traditional main street and helping it compete with the newer
shopping malls, big box stores and office parks located elsewhere.
To revitalize an older business district, Main
Streets use the “Four Point” approach
of economic restructuring, promotions, design and organization. A committee is
in charge of each of the four points – and committee volunteers undertake
appropriate projects. A recent example of a project here in Martinez would be
our Marketing Committee’s creation of a 4-page color advertising supplement
to be placed in the Contra Costa Times the day after Thanksgiving. This supplement
will encourage newspaper readers to shop in downtown Martinez – and contains
ads for many of our downtown businesses.
I would like to invite you all to attend MSM’s
annual meeting at 7 pm on Wednesday evening,
November 12th at the Stahlberg Photography Studio.
After a
brief business meeting, you will be able to enjoy the hors d'oeuvres and beverages
while you chat with our Executive Director, our Board members and other dedicated
MSM volunteers.

From
the Executive Director
Leanne Peterson
The outside temperature is starting to drop and I'm reminded
that winter is fast approaching. Along with it is the traditional events such
as the Holiday Frolic & Snow Park and First Night Martinez. You will read
more about these two community events in this newsletter.
I'm excited to announce two holiday business promotions
taking place in December. The first, in conjunction with the Snow Park is Win
the Holiday Window where participants can win the entire contents of a window
display filled with items from downtown businesses.
The second is Let's Wine about Winter on Dec.13. Participants purchase a wine
glass and tasting tickets and stroll the streets visiting businesses, tasting
wine, holiday shopping and dining. |

Leanne Peterson |
We'll be needing lots
of volunteers to help with all of these promotions.
If you have time to spare, please contact Barbara
Kapsalis, volunteer coordinator at 925.408.1338.
She will place you in the type of job and time
slot that best suits your schedule.
Hopefully you've noticed that the tree lights were recently repaired. Please
let me know if you find a tree that isn't lit up. You may have also heard that
the Directories have been installed downtown. There's one in front of the train
station, one in the plaza near Starbuck's (this one lights up) and one across
from the old Train Station. The fourth will go at the corner of Court & Main
St. when the 630 Court St. project gets underway. The map/directory are being
updated, printed, and will be installed withing the next two weeks. A very big
thanks to the City Public Works Dept. for getting them installed. They look great!
Here's to a happy and successful holiday season!

Meet
City Manager Philip Vince
Philip’s career in the public sector
began in 1986 as a Management Analyst for the
Parks and Recreation Department in Novato.
He participated in a rotation program to become
a City Manager in which he moved to a new department
every two years to gain experience. By the
time he left Novato after 17 years to become
Moraga’s Town Manager, he had served
in every department. His tenure in Moraga
was four and a half years.
Philip is excited
about the new challenges that await him
in Martinez.
His primary objective is to make Martinez
one of the premier cities in California. “I
want to implement Council’s goals
in a timely manner and unite staff and
the community to move in the same direction.
I want to energize the downtown revitalization
process, fix the roads and parks, and make
Martinez a first-class planned destination
area for those coming from ferry, train,
or some alternative intermodal transit,” he
said, adding, “I
see myself as a uniting influence
among all the stakeholders in Martinez.”
|
Phil Vince |
Philip
would also like to introduce more nightlife
in town to ensure the residents’ needs
are met; add more attractive senior housing
in the downtown area to stimulate a more
vibrant residential/retail environment; and
resolve some of the longstanding downtown
parking issues to make visiting Martinez
more convenient. “I am a big fan of
optimizing all the City’s unique attributes
to make it thrive
on a daily basis,” he stated. “My biggest thrill is building community
and getting all the stakeholders to compromise a little bit for the benefit of
the entire City. I enjoy seeing the restaurants full, the parks overflowing with
sports activities and the pool put to optimum use. It all comes down to balancing
the current and future needs of the residents.”
Philip received his Bachelor’s degree in European History from St. Mary’s
College in 1979 and his Master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration
in 1986. His wife and two children enjoy trips to Old Orchard Beach in Maine
every summer. Both children play lots of organized sports, and Philip has coached
basketball and baseball for over 10 years ranging from tiny tots to junior varsity
high school. His hobbies include reading, hiking, snorkeling and attending art
and leisure events.

Economic
Restructuring-
George Bell, Chair
The last few months have seen some new steps in
Main Street Martinez' efforts to help develop downtown
into a stronger business
destination.
Unforeseen events and schedule conflicts have
interfered with the most visible aspect of
the ER Committee's work -- the monthly "Merchant
Meetings" for downtown businesses of all
types -- in recent months But the behind-the-scenes,
long-range efforts that are the core of economic
restructuring and business development have been
moving into important new stages.
Work on recruiting new businesses for the downtown
area has taken form, for instance. This is involving
research trips to selected Northern California
communities, both to research their business
mixes and to actively target businesses that
meet the defined profile of enterprises that
can best succeed in downtown Martinez climate.
These efforts are running parallel with the similar
efforts of City Manager Philip Vince and Assistant
City Manager Karen Majors.
Also -- and equally in concert with the City's
top management -- the ER Committee has been involved
in helping find potential solutions to the dilemmas
involved in retrofitting un reinforced masonry
buildings for seismic safety. Efforts are underway
to bring together the downtown property owners,
financial institutions, engineers, architects,
and various state and federal programs to find
options that can make these retrofits economically
viable.
Obviously, none of these efforts are made any
easier by today's harsh economic climate -- and
even in the best of times, neither falls into
the "quick and easy fix" category.
Both are endeavors in which a long-term strategic
view, professionalism, patience & perseverance;
and the understanding that these
undertakings are processes, not events; are foundations.
A special thanks has to go, again, to Philip
Vince, Karen Majors and the City staff for their
support and active involvement in these efforts.
And even more so, perhaps, to the handful of
volunteers who are investing their time, their
personal expenses and lost income from time off
work, and their professional skills to enhance
the longer-range prospects of downtown Martinez.

Organization
Committee - Paul Gil and Mike Caylor
The Organization Committee
strives to strengthen and maintain a strong Main
Street organization
by coordinating the behind-the-scenes action that
is essential to success. Volunteer recruitment,
retention and recognition, fundraising, public
relations, and communication through publications
are just a few of the Committee’s activities.
The goal of the Main Street Martinez Organization
Committee is three fold:
communicate the Main Street Martinez goals and activities
internally and externally
create a volunteer program to strengthen the organization
through membership development
raise funds for Main Street Martinez through grant
writing>
The Organization Committee is currently seeking members
and volunteers who want to make a difference and
have a positive influence on our community here in
Martinez. This can only be achieved by a growing
number of participants to implement and fund the
Main Street programs. If you would like to become

the dinner selection a difficult choice. We especially
loved the moon crab appetizer and the braised lamb
